Laboratory studies on the sputtering contribution to the sodium atmospheres of Mercury and the Moon

چکیده
To ascertain the importance of sputtering by solar wind ions on the formation of a sodium exosphere around Mercury and the Moon, we have irradiated with 4 keV He ions, the Na bearing tectosilicates: albite, labradorite, and anorthoclase, as well as adsorbed Na layers deposited on albite and on olivine (a neosilicate that does not contain Na). Sodium at the surface and near surface (<40 Å) was quantified with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after each irradiation to determine the depletion cross section. We measured a cross section for sputtering of Na adsorbed on mineral surfaces, rs 1 10 15 cm atom . In addition, mass spectrometric analyses of the sputtered flux show that a large fraction of the Na is sputtered as ions rather than as neutral atoms. These results have strong implications for modeling the sodium population within the mercurian and the lunar exospheres. 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Photon-stimulated desorption of Na from a lunar sample: temperature-dependent effects
We report recent results in an investigation of source mechanisms for the origin of Na atoms in tenuous planetary atmospheres, focusing on non-thermal processes. Experiments include photon stimulated desorption (PSD), electron stimulated desorption (ESD), and ion sputtering of Na atoms from the surface of a lunar basalt sample. Bombardment of the sodium covered surface by 3 keV Ar+ ions removes...
متن کاملModeling the Moon’s Extended Sodium Cloud as a Tool for Investigating Sources of Transient Atmospheres
A review is presented of wide-angle, low-light-level imaging observations of the Moon’s extended sodium atmosphere and Monte Carlo simulation studies used in their interpretation. The observational results at quarter and fulI Moon show dramatically different morphology patterns. The computer model results show that both morphologies are consistent with a single source function and subsequent dy...
متن کاملObservational Test for the Solar Wind Sputtering Originof the Moon’s Extended Sodium Atmosphere
We present observations of the lunar sodium atmosphere during four lunar eclipses between 1993 and 1997. With the Moon inside the magnetosphere, and therefore shielded from solar wind impact, we find its Na atmosphere to be comparable in abundance to cases near first and third quarter, implying that solar wind ion sputtering is not a significant source of the atmosphere. The atmosphere is azimu...

Background and objectives: Oliveria decumbens belongs to Apiaceae family and is used in wide range of diseases such as gastrointestinal disorder. Several studies have shown that Oliveria decumbens essential oil possessed high amount of thymol and carvacrol but some other studies revealed that myristicin was one of the main components of the oil. The aim of the...
